Review: The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

A surprising emotional, twisty thriller that dives into the secrets and betrayal of two marriages that are intertwined in more ways than they know.

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is set to release by St.Martin's Press on April 4, 2023. I believe Book of the Month had an early release of this title for their March selections, and I was excited to see the high reviews.

Gabe and Pippa live in their dream cottage, in a small coastal town near a cliff. In the short time they have lived there - Gabe has invested himself in talking down desperate individuals who come to the cliff with the intention of ending their life. One victim doesn't make it and the secrets begin to unfold - Pippa starts to question things. Will this be the perfect concoction of deceit and realization that Pippa may not have known Gabe, truly?

I was immediately hooked by Pippa, Gabe, and their darling little girls. Everything about their lives was well-written and engaging. From the troubles to the good times and even the OMG moments. The chapters are just the right length to keep pulling you in, from multiple POVs and timelines.

I continue to enjoy books that have a big reveal or event at the beginning and then you're taken back in time to get all the pieces leading up to it. The author executed this well by giving a 'Then & Now' timeline from each perspective - in my opinion it provided a nice lead to the ending, taking place in the 'Now' timeline.

As more is unveiled, I was absolutely frustrated, there are a lot of secrets, poor decisions, and emotional realizations, but that made this a winner for me. I love a book that can take me through the emotions and see the reality behind the fictional world. I also have to take a moment to gush over the hilarious characters the author built through Pipa and Gabe's daughters that provided some laughter and cheekiness to lighten the mood.

I rated this 3.75 stars for the rollercoaster ride, execution of multiple perspectives, and the setting of this book. I'm a new fan of Sally Hepworth and look forward to consuming more of her books. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
