Reading Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass for the First Time

While awaiting the third installment of SJM's Crescent City series set to release in January 2024, I impulsively challenged myself to read her first series Throne of Glass, and document my honest reactions and opinions on these wildly popular books.

Throne of Glass (TOG) is a well-known series by the famed author Sarah J Maas, also responsible for A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), and Crescent City. My understanding is that SJM started writing TOG on FictionPress.com and was encouraged by her readers to seek publication, which she accomplished in 2012.

I felt a tinge of overwhelm when I started researching recommendations on how to consume this series but ultimately decided to follow the tandem read of Empire of Storms & Tower of Dawn and the following order:

  • Throne of Glass

  • Crown of Midnight

  • Heir of Fire

  • The Assassin's Blade

  • Queen of Shadows

  • Empire of Storms*

  • Tower of Dawn*

  • Kingdom of Ash

*Tandem Read

This format may be more of a challenge because it requires you to read Empire of Storms & Tower of Dawn together. These two books are different stories entirely but are taking place at the same time. I found an awesome checklist to help you track this on T.L. Branson's blog.

I'm doing my best to go into this series with an open mind and I expect to have fun while riding the emotional waves of an 8 book series. I don't have a set timeline or commitment that I'm reading these books back to back but I will be updating this page with links to each review, so check back or follow me on GoodReads & IG to see where I'm at with this read through.

If you've read TOG and want to talk about your experience or share your review - I'm all ears and would like nothing more than to talk books!
